The website www.thedeckerguide.com rates Steamboat Springs as one of the best ski resorts in Colorado. The author admits that it is very difficult to choose a "best" ski resort in Colorado as there are many too consider. Steamboat has long been a favorite ski destination and being closer to Denver and air transportation is advantageous to this resort. We LOVE skiing Snowmass. Today Snowmass is not only a ski area but a resort town with close to 2000 year-round residents. It is the second largest ski area in Colorado with Vail being the largest. Snowmass ranks among the top 10 resorts in America in size. Snowmass is "massive". It covers more than 3,100 acres and lays claim to the longest vertical drop in the United States...4,406 feet. Snowmass has a wide range of runs that satisfy the beginners, the intermediates and the expert skiers. They operate 23 lifts including the new Elk Camp Gondola which runs from the base of Fanny Hill to Elk Camp in seven minutes with a midway loading and unloading station. Another selling point for Snowmass is that 95% of the lodging is ski-in/ski-out...how convenient is that! Snowmass Village Mall has many shops, restaurants, bars and ski services. The resort has started construction on its new base village which is scheduled to be completed in 2012. Hundreds of condos as well as homes line the lower part of this mountain resort. For families with children, Snowmass offers an excellent ski program as well as child care for children 8 weeks old and older. |
