The website www.highwaytraveling.com suggests Boulder, Colorado as a "small town with an advantage". Having spent 4 days in Boulder four years ago, we agree with the author's assessment. We loved the proximity of the city to the mountains which gives a multitude of hiking opportunities. The downtown Plaza provided a great place for our grandchildren to experiment and play and for musicians to entertain daily. The shopping areas on both sides of the plaza have an array of ships with unique merchandise and feature excellent customer service. Years ago new neighbors from North Carolina moved in next door. The wife of the couple had grown up in Mount Airy, North Carolina, a small town with a population of about 8000. She described the town as still portraying the "simpler life". These neighbors continued to promote Mount Airy as a great place to experience, even for a day. Driving or biking the breathtaking Blue Ridge Parkway, hiking at Pilot Mountain State Park were experiences mentioned as "must do". Mount Airy is the hometown of actor Andy Griffith. The town does remind one of the town of Mayberry where the viewers of The Andy Griffith Show could visit Floyd's City Barber Shop, Mayberry Soda Fountain, Andy's childhood home and more. In more recent years, the area's rich soil has permitted the growth of vineyards. About 15 minutes from Mount Airy is one of the largest vineyard areas in the Southeast. Mount Airy is the home of the Old North Sate Winery. Many other wineries are located close to this quaint small town. Andy Griffith would say that Mount Airy is "like coming home again". The Best Wisconsin Towns 2008 Winner was Bayfield, a beautiful, scenic small town that is on Lake Superior. Bayfield is considered the main gateway to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. This is a wonderful tourist destination with opportunities for sailing, boating, kayaking and fishing. Visitors will want to take the ferry to Madeline Island, the largest of the Apostle Islands, with private residences and the Madeline Island Inn. Bayfield has done a splendid job of preserving the history of the town with a number of buildings on the National Register of Historic Sites. The area has numerous cottages, motels, bed & breakfasts, guest houses and lodges to accommodate visitors. Bayfield's population is only about 2000, however they handle and serve tourists well. America has many small towns to experience and visit. Continue to visit the website www.highwaytraveling.com whether you travel by plane, train or car! |
