The website www.ileisuretravel.com has an excellent article about Arizona State Parks that is a motivating invitation to travel and explore the state parks and trails of Arizona. The article has information on Kartchner Caverns State Park located southeast of Tucson. Having spent most of an entire day at these caverns, we enthusiastically endorse this unique experience. You will view stalactites dripping down like icicles, stalagmites reaching up from the ground and numerous unusual formations in an environment carefully maintained to protect the awewome features of these caves. Put Kartchner Caverns State Park on your "must do" list! Jerome State Historic Park offers a panoramic view from its mountaintop location. Currently it is closed due to budget cuts and repair of the historic mansion, a museum devoted to the history of Jerome. Jerome was built above a vast deposit of copper. Prehistoric Native Americans were the first miners followed by the Spanish. Americans laid claim to the area in 1876. It was the "boom town" of its time, however with fluctuating copper prices, depression and wars, the mines closed in 1953. Today Jerome is a thriving community and home to writers, artists, artisans, musicians, historians and archeologists.
Watch for its re-opening...it is worth the wait!
