Plan to spend at least 4 hours in the mountain town of Jerome. In 1876 prospectors staked claims on the rich copper deposits in this mountain. Over the years numerous owners purchased and developed the mine. The mine completely shut down in 1953. Today this mountain town is home to artists, archeologists and many retirees. Numerous art galleries, gift shops and quaint restaurants make for a great day-trip.
Take a trip onboard the Verde Canyon Railroad in Clarksdale, about 30 minutes from Sedona. This is a 4-hour scenic trip in "first-class" passenger coaches with viewing cars for photo shoots. As the train travels over many bridges, one can see wildlife, eagles and scenery that is spectacular! With purchase of a train ride ticket, food and beverages are included. Plan ahead as tickets for this experience sell out rapidly.
