Jane Harper, infection prevention specialist with the Minnesota Department of Health, reported in a recent newspaper article that "germs are smarrter these days so there is more reason to want to avoid them".
What are some ways to outsmart germs? It is commonly understood that keeping healthy and free from colds, flu and the like is mostly about our hands i.e. washing them often. Keeping one's hands away from our nose, mouth and ears is helpful in the winter season and remembering to cover coughs and sneezes. (Note: Getting a flu shot helps us keep healthy but does not safeguard us from germs).
Where do some of those "tough" germs lurk? Here is a listing of just a few common places and items that have the potential of making us sick:
*bathroom doorknobs and faucets *paper towel dispensers in public restrooms
*television remote controls *ketchup dispensers in a restaurant *ATM machines
*kitchen & bathroom sinks *shaking hands with a person that has a cold *garbage cans
*playground equipment *machines at your fitness club *the cat's litter box
*cleaning items i.e. sponges and dishcloths
You may ask, "How can I possibly avoid getting sick considering this list"? Being conscious of what you TOUCH is important. As stated previously, washing hands. covering our mouth with a hand or sleeve, avoiding shaking hands will not totally protect you from illlness. However all of those suggestions can help fight off some of the germs we come in contact with on a daily basis.
Perhaps it isn't such a bad idea to use the alcohol wipes that are now available in some public places such as grocery stores, fitness clubs, etc. Carrying in your pocket or handbag that small container of liquid hand cleanser may also aid in outsmarting germs.
When you do become ill, STAY HOME and take care of yourself!
