Christmas 2008: Preparing to Simplify the Celebration

Christmas brings expectations of gatherings with family and friends and a variety of other events and celebrations that we all look forward to.  This year there is not only an expectation of "cutting back" on Christmas spending but also the need to assess and evaluate  the  most important elements of the season and to discover how to continue those gatherings with family and friends with economy in mind.

Planning ahead is an important key to cutting expenses and yet maintaining the important elements of the holiday.  Gathering with family and friends to share the true meaning of Christmas is the number one criteria for many.

What are some of the ways we can cut our holiday spending and maintain the expectations and the importance of the Christmas celebration?
     1.  Communicate with your family and friends about their current concerns and
          expectations for this Christmas.
     2.  Discuss their ideas and needs for "cutting back" without eliminating the gathering.
     3.  Should there be a gift exchange?  If so, what dollar amount works best for all?
Should the group consider to bring items to contribute to a local food shelf?
     4.  Suggest that all participate in the event whether it be in planning the activities or
          preparing the food.
     5.  Make a plan that simplifies the celebration and yet accommodates the ideas that
          were expressed.
     4.  Communicate the plan.  Assign the tasks...some help with the activities; some
          contribute to the menu.
     5.  If you are planning to host the event, plan ahead for the portion of the food for which
you are responsible.  Think through the seating plan and table setting for the main
          meal.
     6.  Plan time for sharing of the Christmas story.  Listen to the memories others have of
their favorite Christmas family gatherings.  Sing favorite Christmas carols.
     7.  Enjoy the time together.  This Christmas holiday just may be the blueprint for many
          other gatherings to come!
