Three tall ships from the ship museum in Erie, Pennsylvania have sailed to Duluth, Minnesota by way of the world's largest lake, Lake Superior. Tours of these ships are being conducted this weekend (August 1-3) from the Duluth harbor. This event is part of a yearlong celebration marking Minnesota's 150th Statehood Anniversary as well as an event of the Duluth Maritime Festival.
These three ships, the Pride of Baltimore II, the U.S. Brig. Niagara and the Schooner Madeline have all been reconstructed using period ship-building techniques. The Pride of Baltimore II and the U.S. Brig. Niagara are now used to educate Americans on the Battle of Lake Erie and the War of 1812. The Schooner Madeline is a reconstruction of a Great Lakes Vessel that sailed the upper Great Lakes 150 years ago.
These tall ships will make a 10-city tour of the Great Lakes this summer. The three ships maintain some fulltime crew as well as some parttime crew. From mid-May to mid-September, adults and teens (age 16 and up) live and sail onboard as "trainees".
The home of the U.S. Brig. Niagara is Erie, Pennsylvania. This warship won the Battle of Lake Erie in the war of 1812. A trip to the Eric Maritime Museum offers a wide range of mullti-media and interactive exhibs as well as interpretive programs. The museum is proud of the regions's rich maritime heritage and their exhibits.
