Symptoms & Causes of Type 1 and Type 1 Diabetes

"Diabetes mellitus" refers to a group of diseases that effect how your body uses blood glucose, also call "blood sugar". Glucose is vital to your cells because it is the main source of energy for the cells that make up your muscles and tissues. It is your body's main fuel source.

No matter if you are type 1 or type 2,  you have too much glucose in your blood, however the reasons for too much glucose may differ and can certainly lead to serious health problems.  The symptoms of diabetes can vary depending on the type of diabetes you may have.  You might expeience some or all of the diabetes symptoms of both diabetes types.

Some of those symptoms may include increased thirst, frequent urination, extreme hunger, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, blurred vision, slow-healing sores or wounds, frequent skin, vaginal or bladder infections.   Type 1 diabetes can occur at any age, however it typically appears during childhood or adolescence.  Type 2 diabetes can develop at any age, is the most common type and can be prevented.

If you think you may have diabetes, contact your doctor immediately.  The earlier the diagnosis, the sooner treatment can begin.  If you have already been diagnosed with diabetes, be sure you follow-up with your doctor until your blood sugar levels stabilize.

As previously stated, glucose is the main source of energy for your cells.  Glucose comes from two major sources:  the food you eat and your liver.  During the digestive process, sugar is absorbed into your bloodstream and normally, it then enters the cells with the help of insulin, the hormone that comes from the pancreas gland.  When you eat, your pancreas secretes insulin into your bloodstream, acting like a key by unlocking "doors" that allow sugar into your cells.  Insulin lowers the amount of sugar in your bloodstream.

As your blood sugar level drops, so does the secretion of insulin from your pancreas.  Your liver is the storage and manufacturing center.  When it has been some time since you have eaten, you liver releases stored up glucose to keep your glucose level within a normal range.

In type 1 diabetes, your immune system which normally fights harmful bacteria or viruses, attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.  This leaves you with very little or no insulin. Instead of being transported into your cells, sugar builds up in your bloodstream.

In type 2 diabetes, your cells become resistant to the action of the insulin causing your pancreas to become unable to make enough insulin to overcome this resistance.  Instead of moving into your cells, sugar builds up in your bloodstream.  It is not known how this happens, however it is suspected that excess abdominal fat and inactivity seem to be important factors.
